On average, drug use in Minnesota is slightly lower than that of the rest of the country. The national average rate of drug use is just under 3%, in Minnesota the average is slightly below 2.5%. Drug use among young people is similarly lower in Minnesota than the rest of the country. About 9.5% of Minnesota residents between the ages of 12 and 17 while national average is about 10%.

The primary drug abused by those recovering from addiction in Minnesota is marijuana. About 43% of people enrolled in rehabilitation programs in the state cited the drug as their primary reason for treatment. Prescription pain killers were mentioned just under 20% of the time followed by various stimulants at just over 18%. Heroin and cocaine were the fourth and fifth most often used drugs in Minnesota at about 10% each.

Treatment Admissions in Minnesota

Alcohol abuse has been decreasing over the past six years in both Minnesota and the rest of the country. Average rates of abuse, however, are still higher in Minnesota than the national rates. About 7.5% of Minnesota residents are dependent on alcohol abuse, about 6.5% of the rest of the country have similar dependency issues.

Heavy alcohol users in Minnesota enroll in treatment programs for their addiction about 2.5% of the time. This leaves over 97% of people who are addicted to alcohol without help towards recovering. Enrollment for illicit drug dependency is higher than for alcohol dependency in Minnesota, as it is nationwide. Still only about 14.5% of Minnesota residents who are addicted to illegal drugs receive treatment leaving over 85% of people in need of treatment without a recovery program.

There are 297 different facilities in Minnesota offering rehabilitation programs for drug and/or alcohol addiction. The majority of these facilities are run by private individuals or groups but there are several public options as well. Most of Minnesota’s treatment centers are exclusively for those seeking recovery from drug or alcohol addiction, but there are many offering treatment for mental health in the same facility as addiction recovery programs. 221 of the 297 facilities in the state are for addiction recovery only, the other 76 offer both types of treatment.
