Drug use in Oregon is, on average, higher than that of the rest of the country. Stimulants were the second most popular response with 31% saying they are their primary drug. The third most frequently cited substance was heroin at 17%. Prescription pain-killers were mentioned by about 10% of respondents and cocaine was the fifth most abused drug in the state at about 3%.

One of the biggest factors in long-term recovery is the length of engagement for treatment and support services. For example, it is recommended that people start at the highest level of care that is medically appropriate and then continue down from detox and residential services to various levels of outpatient treatment. The length of rehabilitation services can be extended this way for many months, providing the therapy and support needed while people return to their normal activities and responsibilities.

An even smaller percentage of heavy alcohol abusers enroll in a rehabilitation program. Less than 7% of Oregon’s alcoholics receive treatment.
In Oregon there are 213 treatment facilities offering programs that help patients overcome addiction to drugs or alcohol. Many of the recovery locations in the state are owned and operated privately, but there are also many facilities that are run by the local, state, or federal government. 142 of the 213 centers are exclusively for people who are overcoming addiction. The other 71 offer addiction rehabilitation services along with other mental health services.
