Virginia’s drug use is, on average, lower than drug use in the rest of the country. In the state just under 2.5% of residents struggle with illicit drug addiction while the average for the country is closer to 3%. The largest concentration of drug addictions occur in young people between the ages of 12 and 17 years old. In this age group about 8.5% of Virginia residents are dependent on illicit drugs. In the United States, about 10% of 12 to 17 year olds struggle with addiction. Alcohol addiction is similarly lower in Virginia than the rest of the country. On average, 6% of Virginians are dependent on alcohol while 6.5% of all Americans have a similar problem.

Virginia’s most frequently abused illicit drug is marijuana. Among those enrolled in treatment facilities in the state, roughly 36% say that marijuana is their primary reason for seeking recovery. Cocaine is the second most often cited drug in Virginia. About 21% of rehabilitation patients list the drug as their primary addiction. Heroin makes up another 14% recovery patient responses, and 13% of treatment facility admissions list prescription pain-killers as their biggest drug problem.

Treatment Admissions in Virginia

In the state, only about 19% of people who struggle with illegal drug addictions ever enroll in a treatment program in order to overcome their dependency. Rates are even lower for people who struggle with alcoholism. About 4.5% of alcoholics find a rehabilitation center in which to recover. Many of these addiction recovery services are offered alongside other mental health services but 89 of the 191 facilities are exclusively for people recovering from addictions. 38% of the patients enrolled in Virginia’s rehabilitation programs are in recovery for illegal drug addictions. 20% are in recovery for alcohol addictions, and the other 42% are enrolled for both drug and alcohol addiction recovery.
